Summary

World War One memorial approximately 2.5m tall, constructed from Portland stone, in the form of a freestanding floriated cross. This memorial was erected around 1920 to commemorate ten local servicemen who died in World War One. The memorial was Listed Grade II in May 2018.

Location: Tivetshall St Margaret War Memorial, St Margaret's Churchyard, Hall Road, Tivetshall.
Type: Floriated Cross
Description:
The memorial is approximately 2.5m tall, constructed from Portland stone, in the form of a freestanding floriated cross. It is used to commemorate ten local servicemen who died in World War One. It has been described as “supported by a four-sided pedestal with deeply moulded cornice including carved motifs of crossed flags, on a two-tiered base”, on a slab foundation (S1). There is an inscription on the pedestal in incised lettering.

Unveiled: Assumed planned and erected around 1920, when the majority of Norfolk’s war memorials were commissioned. Additional research required.
Inscription: IN MEMORY OF THE MEN OF/ TIVETSHALL ST MARGARET/ WHO LAID DOWN THEIR/ LIVES IN THE GREAT WAR/ 1914 – 1918/ (NAMES)/ GREATER LOVE HATH NO MAN/ THAN THIS, THAT A MAN LAY/ DOWN HIS LIFE FOR HIS FRIENDS./ R.I.P.
