Summary

World War One memorial approximately 2.5m tall, constructed from Portland stone, in the form of a freestanding floriated cross. This memorial was possibly erected around 1920. It is used to commemorate twelve local servicemen who died in World War One. The memorial was Listed Grade II in July 2018. It was restored in 2001 by The Friends of St Mary Church.

Location: Churchyard of St Mary's Church, Gissing Road, Tivetshall St Mary.
Type: Floriated Cross
Description:
The memorial is approximately 2.5m tall, constructed from Portland stone, in the form of a freestanding floriated cross. It is used to commemorate twelve local servicemen who died in World War One. It has been described as “supported by a four-sided pedestal with a deeply moulded cornice including carved motifs, on a two-tiered base”, on a slab foundation (S1). There is an inscription on the pedestal in incised lettering.

Unveiled: Assumed planned and erected around 1920, when the majority of Norfolk’s war memorials were commissioned. Additional research required.
Inscription: IN MEMORY OF THE MEN OF/ TIVETSHALL ST MARY/ WHO LAID DOWN THEIR/ LIVES IN THE GREAT WAR/ 1914 – 1918/ (NAMES)/ GREATER LOVE HAS NO MAN/ THAT THIS, THAT A MAN LAY/ DOWN HIS LIFE FOR HIS FRIENDS./ R.I.P.

2001. Restoration.
The memorial was restored in 2001 by the Friends of St Mary's Church following a grant from the War Memorials Trust. The cross head of the memorial was repaired during the restoration, having been broken at some point previously. The memorial was rededicated on 11 November 2001.
