Summary

Trial trenching at this site revealed a number of features of likely medieval to modern date including pits and several ditches. No earlier objects were recovered and medieval finds were limited to a very small pottery assemblage - with a large probably quarry pit the only feature that could be dated to this period with any degree of confidence. The ditches were similarly aligned to the medieval to post-medieval cropmark features recorded in the field to the south of School Road (NHER 36717) but unfortunately produced little in the way of dating evidence. Two of the ditches did however produce post-medieval finds suggesting at least some of these features were of relatively recent date. Two similarly-aligned linear features were also found to contain modern land drains.

Map

March 2018. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of proposed development site.
This work identified a number of features, although in most cases dating evidence was fairly limited. Apart from a single residual sherd of Saxo-Norman pottery all of the finds recovered were of Early Medieval or later date. The only feature that could be identified as medieval with any degree of confidence was a large probable quarry pit that produced more than 20 medieval pottery sherds. A single medieval sherd were also recovered from another large irregular pit and a third possible quarry pit produced a floor tile of medieval or post-medieval date.
The other features identified included a number of ditches, all of which were aligned roughly east-to-west or north-to-south. The small number of finds from these features included a medieval pottery sherd found in of the north-to-south aligned ditches and fragments of post-medieval pottery and brick recovered from two other, similarly-aligned features. Two north-to-south aligned linear features were found to contain modern ceramic land drains.
Other excavated features included several unremarkable possible pits and a single post-hole, all of which were undated.
No unstratified finds were recovered.
