Summary

Trial trenching at this site in 2016 revealed two parallel ditches that both produced worked flints of possible Bronze Age or Iron Age. The presence of this material suggests that these otherwise undated features were potentially prehistoric in date, but this is far from certain. A watching brief maintained during subsequent groundworks the same year recorded no additional features.

Map

April 2016. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of proposed site of material sourcing pond.
One of the five trenches excavated revealed two parallel east-to-west aligned ditches, both of which were only visible following the removal of a sandy clay subsoil. The larger of the two produced two flint flakes and two tiny unidentifiable fragments of ceramic material. Several additional worked flints and a single burnt flint were recovered from the adjacent feature. The flints include a retouched flake of possible Bronze Age or Iron Age date and the crude nature of the other flints suggests that they could well be of a similar age. The presence of this material means that the ditches were potentially of later prehistoric date, although this is far from certain.

June-July 2016. Watching Brief.
Monitoring of groundworks associated with creation of clay sourcing pond as part of Broadland Flood Alleviation Project.
No archaeologically significant features were recorded during either the initial topsoil stripping or the subsequent excavation of the pond itself.
See report (S2) for further details.
