Summary

World War One memorial with World War Two additions, constructed from Portland stone in the form of a freestanding Latin cross-head. This memorial was unveiled November 1919 to commemorate fourteen members of the local community who died in World War One, and latterly four men who died in World War Two. It was re-lettered in 1998 and was further conserved in 2014. The memorial was Listed Grade II in July 2018.

Location: Approximately 11m south of the Church of SS Peter and Paul, The churchyard, Church Road, Watlington.
Type: Latin Cross
Description:
The memorial is constructed from Portland stone, in the form of a freestanding Latin cross-head. It is used to commemorate fourteen members of the local community who died in World War One, and latterly four men who died in World War Two. It is described as “rising from the collar of a tall and slender” octagonal cross shaft. With the collar “ornamented to front and rear with a monogrammed shield”. The cross shaft is standing on a pedestal which is “square on plan at the base, has an octagonal drum-like upper surface and the four corners are shouldered. The pedestal stands on a two-stepped base, square on plan” (S1). There is an inscription to the front face of the pedestal, with names to the remaining pedestal faces and to the base (front riser of upper step).
