Summary

World War One memorial with World War Two additions, constructed from stone in the form of a freestanding Latin cross. This memorial was unveiled April 1921 to commemorate ten local servicemen who died in World War One, and latterly seven men who died in World War Two. The memorial was Listed Grade II in July 2018.

Location: Churchyard of St Mary's Church, High Street, Whissonsett.
Type: Latin Cross
Description:
The memorial is constructed from stone, in the form of a freestanding Latin cross. It is used to commemorate ten local servicemen who died in World War One, and latterly seven men who died in World War Two. It is described as standing on “an octagonal shaft with moulded foot and shield of St George in relief to the front, on a four-sided plinth with heavily notched upper corners, on a two-tiered base and concrete foundation.” (S1). There are inscriptions in incised lettering. To a side face of the plinth is a general dedication (Inscription A), the remaining dedications (Inscriptions B and C) are on panels that may be replacements to front of the memorial (S4). The former World War One dedication is to a panel on the plinth, with ten associated names (Inscription B). The latter World War Two dedication is to a panel on the top tier of the base, along with seven associated names (Inscription C).

Inscription A: THEIR NAME/ LIVETH/ FOR EVERMORE.
Inscription B: TO THE GLORY OF GOD/ AND IN HONOURED/ MEMORY OF THE/ MEN OF WHISSONSETT/ WHO FELL IN THE GREAT WAR 1914 – 1918/ (NAMES).
Inscription C: 1939 – 1945/ (NAMES).
