Summary

World War One memorial with World War Two additions, constructed from a dark grey marble in the form of a freestanding, polished, obelisk. This memorial was erected around 1920 to commemorate four local servicemen who died in World War One, and latterly one man who died in World War Two. The memorial was Listed Grade II in July 2018.

Location: Churchyard of Christchurch, Whittington Hill, Whittington, Northwold.
Type: Obelisk
Description:
The memorial is constructed from dark grey marble, in the form of a freestanding, polished, obelisk. It is used to commemorate four local servicemen who died in World War One, and latterly one man who died in World War Two. It is described with the “shaft consisting of two sections” (S1) residing “upon two, tired square plinths, standing upon a beveled grey marble base” (S4). There are inscriptions in incised lettering on the plinths facing Whittington Hill road. The former World War One dedication is to the upper plinth (S4), with four associated names (Inscription A). The latter World War Two dedication is to the lower plinth, along with a single associated name (Inscription B).

Unveiled: Assumed planned and erected around 1920, when the majority of Norfolk’s war memorials were commissioned. Additional research required.
Inscription A: THE GREAT WAR/ A.D. 1914 – 1918/ ERECTED/ BY THE PEOPLE OF/ WHITTINGTON/ A.D. 1919/ IN GRATEFUL MEMORY/ OF THE MEN/ WHO FELL BRAVELY/ IN DEFENCE OF THEIR COUNTRY/ (NAMES).
Inscription B: 1939 – 1945/ (NAME).
