World War One Memorial
Location: Approximately 50m to the north-east of St Peter's Church, The churchyard, St Peters Road, Great Walsingham, Walsingham.

Description:
The memorial is constructed from stone, in the form of a freestanding wheel-head cross. It is used to commemorate sixteen local servicemen who died in World War One. It has been described as “rising from the moulded collar of the slender, octagonal shaft”. The shaft standing “on a pedestal, square on plan, with moulded upper corners, that stands on a two-stage base. The base has freestone corners and cornice, with knapped flint panels in the sides of the upper stage. A step is built into the upper stage of the base, on the south side” (S1). There is are inscriptions on the pedestal, with the dedicatory inscriptions to the north (Inscription A) and south (Inscription B) faces, along with the associated names to the east and west faces, all in carved relief.

Unveiled: Assumed planned and erected around 1920, when the majority of Norfolk’s war memorials were commissioned. Additional research required.
Inscription A: GREATER LOVE HATH/ NO MAN THAN THIS THAT/ A MAN LAY DOWN HIS/ LIFE FOR HIS FRIENDS.
Inscription B: IN PROUD AND/ GRATEFUL REMEMBRANCE OF/ THE MEN/ OF GREAT WALSINGHAM/ WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES/ FOR KING AND COUNTRY/ IN THE WAR/ 1914 – 1919.
