Map

April 2020. Watching Brief.
Monitoring of groundworks associated with installation of new water pipeline.
Two features were recorded following the stripping of the pipeline easement in this field; a medieval pit and a post-medieval post-hole.
The pit was a circular feature that produced sherds of high medieval pottery, fragments of a roof tile and a single, residual prehistoric flint flake. The probable post-hole was a much smaller feature that contained fragments of post-medieval brick that had possibly been used as post packing.
There was no evidence for surviving sub-surface remains associated with three north-to-south aligned linear cropmarks previously recorded in the western half of the field (NHER 52039). It should though be noted that natural geological deposits were only intermittently fully exposed and it is possible that additional features were obscured by the remaining remnants of the subsoil layer (which was present beneath the topsoil along the whole of the monitored section of the pipe route).
A small number of unstratified finds were recovered, including:
6 medieval pottery sherds.
2 medieval/post-medieval pottery sherds.
1 post-medieval pottery sherd.
4 post-medieval/modern pottery sherds, 1 thimble and 1 eyelet.
2 modern coins.
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.
P. Watkins (HES), 8 March 2021.
