Summary

A watching brief maintained during the redevelopment of this site in 2015 recorded a pit and a ditch that were both of probable medieval date. Other remains were limited to a large undated pit and an irregular modern feature. A range of unstratified finds were also recovered including prehistoric worked flints; medieval to post-medieval pottery and ceramic building material; a fragment of post-medieval clay tobacco pipe; undatable fragments of animal bone and metal-working debris and

March-April 2015. Watching Brief.
Monitoring of groundworks associated with construction of four new bungalows (Plots 1-4).
The excavation of foundation trenches for these new buildings revealed two adjacent features of probable medieval date in the south-east corner of the site. The first was a shallow oval pit with heat-affected partially clay-lined sides and a dark, charcoal-rich fill. This produced six sherds of medieval pottery. The second feature was a probable ditch that appeared to be aligned north-west to south-west (and therefore parallel to the nearby streets). The primary fill of this feature produced medieval pottery, animal bone, fired clay and an iron nail. Three sherds of ?prehistoric handmade pottery recovered from its upper fill were presumably residual.
Other remains recorded included a large oval pit-like feature that produced mussel shells and animal bone but no datable finds. A large irregular modern feature was also encountered in one of the plots.
A significant proportion of the finds recovered came from topsoil and subsoil deposits. These unstratified objects included undatable prehistoric flint flakes; medieval, medieval/post-medieval, post-medieval and post-medieval/modern pottery; medieval bricks and floor tiles; post-medieval roof tiles; a fragment of undiagnostic fired cay; a post-medieval clay tobacco pipe stem; undatable animal bone; fragments of metal-working debris and a small assemblage of post-medieval and undated metal objects.
See report (S1) for further details.
The archive associated with this work has been deposited with Norwich Castle Museum (NWHCM : 2017.304).
