Full Description
World War One Memorial with World War Two Additions
Location: Junction of Church Road with The Street (A1066), South Lopham.
Type: Cross Fleuree
Description:
The memorial is constructed from Portland stone, in the form of a freestanding cross fleurée. It is used to commemorate ten members of the local community who died in World War One, and latterly two men who died in World War Two. It is described as “on a tapering, octagonal shaft with a moulded collar. The shaft foot, square on plan, is ornamented with small foliage carvings at the corners and a moulded base. The cross rises from a four-sided capped and corniced pedestal. Foliage designs are carved in low relief on the sloping surfaces of the cap”, with rectangular stone panels to the faces of the pedestal, each with concave corners (S1). Below the pedestal is a two-stepped base. Additional reliefs are noted to the south-east faces. One is a “carving of a small laurel wreath between crossed and painted Union Flags” above the panel on the pedestal (S1). A second is below the pedestal, to the chamfered edge on the south-east face of the lower step, in the form of a low relief carving of a rifle. There are also inscriptions in incised lettering, painted black. The former World War One dedication starts to the panel on the south-east face of the pedestal, along with ten associated names (Inscription A), and continues within a recessed panel to the upper step of the base (Inscription B). The latter World War Two dedication is to the panel on the south-west face of the pedestal, along with two associated names (Inscription C). The whole is set within enclosure of eight stone posts linked by a spiked chain.
