Summary

World War One memorial with World War Two additions, constructed from grey granite in the form of a freestanding floriated cross. This memorial was erected around 1920 to commemorate seventeen local servicemen who died in World War One, and latterly eight men who died in World War Two. The memorial was Listed Grade II in August 2018.

Location: Roadside, Norwich Road (A1151), Junction with Church Lane, Wroxham.
Type: Floriated Cross
Description:
The memorial is constructed from grey granite, in the form of a freestanding floriated cross. It is used to commemorate seventeen local servicemen who died in World War One, and latterly eight men who died in World War Two. It is described as a small cross “with Celtic-inspired strap work incised on the face”. This cross is situated on a shaft with the strap work continuing to the top half. It is standing “on an elegant two-tiered, moulded foot atop a simple square base” (S1). There are inscriptions in incised, painted lettering. These start to the to the bottom half of the shaft, along with the associated names (Inscription A), and continue to the base (Inscription B).

Unveiled: Assumed planned and erected around 1920, when the majority of Norfolk’s war memorials were commissioned. Additional research required.
Inscription A: IN GRATEFUL MEMORY OF/ THE GLORIOUS DEAD / WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES/ AT SEA, ON LAND AND IN THE AIR/ FIGHTING FOR/ GOD, KING AND EMPIRE,/ 1914 – 1918/ (NAMES)/ 1939 – 1945/ (NAMES).
Inscription B: THIS CROSS IS GIVEN TO THE VILLAGE OF WROXHAM IN LOVING MEMORY OF LT ARTHUR WILLIAM PASSMORE/ WHO FELL IN ACTION NEAR HULLOCH, FRANCE APRIL 5TH 1916.
