Full Description
World War One Memorial
Location: Holy Trinity and All Saints Churchyard, Black Street, Winterton-on-Sea.
Type: Wheel-head Cross
Description:
The memorial is constructed from Cornish granite, in the form of a freestanding, rough-hewn (S4), Celtic wheel-head cross. It is used to commemorate eighteen servicemen who died in World War One. The memorial has been described “with a tall shaft that rises and tapers in rectangular section from a trapezoidal plinth with polished surfaces for the leaded inscriptions. It stands on a single-step base of granite, below which is a two-stepped concrete sub base” (S1). There is a dedicatory inscription on the plinth’s west face. Twelve of the associated names inscribed to the south face, and the remaining six to the north face respectively.

Unveiled: 5 July 1919 by Mrs R. Acland and dedicated by the Reverend W. A. Green.
Inscription: ‘THIS MEMORIAL/ WAS ERECTED TO THE GLORY OF GOD/ AND IN HONOUR OF THOSE MEN/ OF THIS PARISH/ WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES FOR THEIR COUNTRY/ IN THE GREAT WAR/ 1914 – 1918’.
