Map

October 2010-April 2011. Trial Trenching.
Excavation of two trenches at proposed sites for directional drilling pits on route of Earlham Grid to Norwich Main Underground Diversion cable (Trenches 1 and 2).
The eastern trench revealed two parallel, north-to-south aligned ditches, both of which were undated. Between these were two narrower, north-east to south-west aligned linear features. One of these produced 11 sherds of Roman pottery and a single sherd of similar date was recovered from the other.
The second trench revealed no archaeologically significant features or deposits.
A reasonably deep subsoil was present in both trenches.
See report (S1) for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 20 March 2021.

March-September 2012. Watching Brief.
Examination of easement stripped during installation of underground electricity cable along western edge of field (Area 1).
No archaeologically-significantly features were observed.
It should though be noted that conditions were far from ideal, as the easement was not stripped under archaeological supervision. It does though appear that the excavation of the cable trench itself may have been monitored at this location.
Finds were limited to two prehistoric flint flakes and a fragment of post-medieval clay tobacco pipe stem.
See report (S2) for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 9 August 2021.
