World War One Memorial with World War Two Addition
Location: Village Green, Castle Road, Wormegay.

Description:
The memorial is constructed from Portland stone, in the form of a freestanding Latin cross. It is used to commemorate eight local servicemen who died in World War One, and latterly a single casualty from World War Two. It is described as “on an octagonal shaft with ‘crown’ moulded collar, atop a small square plinth with circular-moulded cap, on a three-stepped base” (S1). The memorial is enclosed by four metal corner posts connected by chains in rows of three. There are inscriptions in incised and filled lettering. The former World War One dedication is on the plinth, it starts to the front (Inscription A), continues with the eight associated names, four to each to each side respectively along with rank and regiment, and ends on the back (Inscription B). At the front of the memorial, the latter World War Two dates and the single associated name, along with rank and regiment (Inscription C), is to a slab sited on the middle step of the base.

Unveiled: Assumed planned and erected around 1920, when the majority of Norfolk’s war memorials were commissioned. Additional research required.
Inscription A: THIS MONUMENT IS ERECTED/ IN GRATEFUL MEMORY OF/ THE MEN OF THIS PARISH/ WHO FELL IN THE GREAT WAR/ 1914-1918.
Inscription B: THEIR NAME/ LIVETH/ FOR EVERMORE.
Inscription C: ALSO/ 1939 – 1945/ (NAME).
