Summary

Trial trenching at this site in 2019 revealed a substantial ditch that clearly represented the continuation of a feature associated with a linear cropmark mapped to the east (part of a large group of probable medieval to post-medieval remains recorded as NHER 57408). Unfortunately no dating evidence was recovered. Another section of this feature was exposed during work to the east in 2014 (where it produced a single sherd of possible Early Saxon pottery - see NHER 64696).

Map

April 2019. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of small proposed development site.
The two trenches excavated were placed in the southern half of the site, as the area to the north is known to contain a large infilled pond (this feature being visible on the Ordnance Survey First Edition Six-inch map (S1)).
The only feature revealed was an east-to-west aligned ditch that was clearly a continuation of a feature associated with a linear cropmark recorded immediately to the east (part of large group of probable medieval to post-medieval roads, boundaries and enclosures recorded as NHER 57408). This ditch was quite substantial, being 1.9m wide and 1m deep, but unfortunately no finds were recovered.
A small assemblage of unstratifed late post-medieval/modern finds was recovered comprising pottery sherds, brick and tile fragments and three copper alloy buttons.
Information from report (S1).
An archive associated with this work has been deposited with Norwich Castle Museum (NWHCM : 2019.227).
