Full Description
September-October 2006. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of area on proposed route of A47 Blofield to North Burlingham dualling.
Examination of central part of site (Area N).
Two positive linear anomalies were of possible archaeological origin.
A number of east-west aligned linear anomalies were though likely to be associated with agricultural activity.
A discrete positive anomaly may represent a pit.
See report (S1) for further details. The results of this work are also summarised in (S2).
An archive associated with this work has been deposited with Norwich Castle Museum (NWHCM : 2016.297).
Previously recorded under NHER 55321 (and before that NHER 39847).
P. Watkins (HES), 10 June 2015. Amended 29 March 2021.
January 2007.
Environmental Statement produced (S3).
P. Watkins (HES), 10 June 2015.
March 2018. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey on route of proposed A47 Blofield to North Burlingham upgrade works.
Examination of entire site, including area surveyed in 2006 (Area BLO11).
Two short, fragmentary linear anomalies in the north-west part of the site were identified as potentially archaeologically significant. None of the other anomalies were considered to be of archaeological interest.
Slightly curvilinear anomalies in the south-west corner of the site correspond with the boundary of a former plantation (‘Turnpike Plantation’) shown on the Ordnance Survey First Edition Six-inch map (S4).
A number of discrete low magnitude anomalies are thought to be the result of changes in the underlying natural geology.
Small, scattered ferrous anomalies are likely to represent modern ferrous debris within the topsoil.
There was no evidence for surviving sub-surface remains associated with the World War Two defences visible on aerial photographs at the eastern end of the site (NHER 49464)
Information from report uploaded to OASIS. HER copy awaited.
P. Watkins (HES), 29 March 2021.
May-July 2020. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of route of proposed A47 Blofield to North Burlingham upgrade works (Trenches 88-92)
The five trenches excavated at this location revealed a number of ditches and a single possible pit, the majority of which produced no finds. The ditches displayed a variety of alignments, with those aligned north-west to south-east or north-east to south-west likely to represent a distinct phase of activity from those aligned north-to-south or east-to-west. This suggestion is supported by the limited dating evidence, which consists of a sherd of possible Iron Age pottery found in a narrow north-east to south-west aligned linear feature and a fragment of medieval or post-medieval roof tile recovered from a more substantial east-to-west aligned ditch.
See report (S5) for further details.
An archive associated with this work has been deposited with Norwich Castle Museum (NWHCM : 2020.103).
