Full Description
World War One Memorial with World War Two Additions
Location: Bungay Road, Junction with Norwich Road, Scole.
Type: Latin Cross
Description:
The memorial is constructed from Portland stone, in the form of a freestanding 3.6m tall Latin cross . It is used to commemorate thirteen local servicemen who died in World War One, and latterly seven men who died in World War Two. It is described “with chamfered edges on a three-tiered octagonal base, also with chamfered edges” set “within a low post and chain enclosure on three sides” (S1). There are inscriptions on the base in incised, and blacked lettering. The former World War One dedication starts to the front, on the top tier (Inscription A), with thirteen associated names across the middle tier, and ends on the bottom tier (Inscription B). The latter World War Two dedication starts to the back with associated names, one to the top tier, and six across the middle tier, and ends on the bottom tier (the position of inscriptions identified from S4 photographs).

Inscription B: WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES FOR THEIR COUNTRY IN THE GREAT WAR 1914 – 1918/ “THEIR NAME LIVETH FOR EVERMORE”.
