World War One Memorial with World War Two Additions
Location: Freethorpe Methodist Churchyard, Chapelfield, Freethorpe.
Type: Pillar/Urn
Description:
The memorial is constructed from a polished red granite, in the form of a freestanding pillar with an urn on top. It is used to commemorate fourteen local servicemen who died in World War One, and latterly two men who died in World War Two. It is described “with crown-shaped moulded cap with incised floral motifs, on a red granite plinth, beneath which is a two-stepped stone base. The whole is within a small, kerbed, gravelled square bounded by 8 low, decorative iron posts connected by thick chains” (S1). There are inscriptions to the pillar in incised lettering. The former World War One dedication is to one face (Inscription A), with fourteen associated names divided equally to two other faces, by rank, age, and regiment. The latter World War Two dedication is to the last face along with two associated names, by rank, age, and regiment (Inscription B; identified from S5).
