Summary

World War One memorial with World War Two additions, constructed from a polished red granite, in the form of a freestanding pillar with an urn on top. This memorial was erected around 1920 to commemorate fourteen local servicemen who died in World War One, and latterly two men who died in World War Two. The memorial was Listed Grade II in May 2018.

Location: Freethorpe Methodist Churchyard, Chapelfield, Freethorpe.
Type: Pillar/Urn
Description:
The memorial is constructed from a polished red granite, in the form of a freestanding pillar with an urn on top. It is used to commemorate fourteen local servicemen who died in World War One, and latterly two men who died in World War Two. It is described “with crown-shaped moulded cap with incised floral motifs, on a red granite plinth, beneath which is a two-stepped stone base. The whole is within a small, kerbed, gravelled square bounded by 8 low, decorative iron posts connected by thick chains” (S1). There are inscriptions to the pillar in incised lettering. The former World War One dedication is to one face (Inscription A), with fourteen associated names divided equally to two other faces, by rank, age, and regiment. The latter World War Two dedication is to the last face along with two associated names, by rank, age, and regiment (Inscription B; identified from S5).

Unveiled: Assumed planned and erected around 1920, when the majority of Norfolk’s war memorials were commissioned. Additional research required.
Inscription A: THIS MONUMENT/ IS ERECTED/ SACRED/ TO THE MEMORY OF/ THOSE OF THIS PARISH/ WHOSE NAMES APPEAR/ HEREWITH/ WHO MADE THE SUPREME/ SACRIFICE DURING THE/ GREAT WAR/ AUG 1914 – NOV 1918/ GREATER LOVE HATH NO/ MAN THAN THIS, THAT A/ MAN LAY DOWN HIS LIFE/ FOR HIS FRIENDS.
Inscription B: SACRED/ ALSO TO THE MEMORY/ OF THE FOLLOWING/ WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES/ FOR THEIR COUNTRY/ IN THE WAR/ 1939 - 45/ (4 NAMES).
