Summary

World War One memorial with World War Two additions, constructed from stone, in the form of a freestanding Celtic wheel-head cross. This memorial was erected to commemorate twelve local servicemen who died in World War One, and latterly a single casualty from World War Two. The memorial was Listed Grade II in January 2018.

Location: The churchyard, St Andrew's Church, Litcham Road, Great Dunham.
Type: Wheel-head Cross
Description:
The memorial is constructed from stone, in the form of a freestanding Celtic wheel-head cross. It is used to commemorate twelve local servicemen who died in World War One, and latterly a single casualty from World War Two. It is described “with decorative interlace relief carving to the cross-head and shaft. The cross stands on a tapering, two-stage plinth, square on plan, with a low base” (S1). There is an inscription to the plinth along with the associated names.

Unveiled: Assumed planned and erected around 1920, when the majority of Norfolk’s war memorials were commissioned. Additional research required. Unveiled by the Reverend H. Barclay MC.
Inscription: TO THE GLORY OF GOD/ AND IN MEMORY OF/ THE MEN OF GREAT DUNHAM/ (12 NAMES)/ WHO FELL IN THE GREAT WAR/ 1914 – 1918/ (NAME) 1944/ GREATER LOVE HATH NO MAN THAN THIS/ THAT A MAN LAY DOWN HIS LIFE FOR HIS FRIENDS.
