NHER 64858 (Building) - The Thatchers, Filby

The Thatchers.
This building was examined by historic building specialist Stephen Heywood.
It is primarily a 17th-century house of lobby entrance type, featuring a winding stair to the lobby side of the chimney stack. However, the west bay appears to be of earlier date. The west bay contains acutely cambered transverse beams of heavy scantling and has provision for arched braces for a former timber frame which was later replaced with 17th century English bond brickwork. The current roof was constructed in the 18th century and features tapered tenons to purlins with diagonal pegging.
The overall interpretation is that the west bay of The Thatchers was a medieval hall which was altered to form a much larger lobby entrance type house in the 17th century.
