Summary

World War One memorial with World War Two additions, constructed from stone, freestanding at 3.9m tall, with a carved crochet cap. This memorial was constructed by J. Cooley and Son of Diss and unveiled in December 1923. It is used to commemorate fifteen local servicemen who died in World War One, and latterly five men who died in World War Two. An additional memorial plaque, constructed from polished stone, was added to the memorial in 2002 to commemorate eighteen Americans who died in an air collision in 1945. The memorial was Listed Grade II in August 2018.

Location: The Street, Junction of Linen Lane, North Lopham.
Description:
The memorial is constructed from stone, freestanding at 3.9m tall, with a carved crochet cap. It is used to commemorate fifteen local servicemen who died in World War One, and latterly five men who died in World War Two. The cap is described as “surmounting an eight-sided tapering shaft with an elaborate base section with four protruding triangular sides bearing carved laurel wreaths. It is set upon a square plinth with elaborate moulding to the cornice, on a two-tiered foot” (S1). There are inscriptions to the plinth in incised, blacked lettering. The former World War One dedication is to one face along with fifteen associated names listed in two columns (Inscription A). The latter World War Two dedication is to an adjoining face, along with five associated names listed (Inscription B; S5, photographs).

Constructed/Sculpted By: J. Cooley and Son of Diss on land given by H. Womack for around £100 (from public subscription).
Unveiled: 09 December 1923 (by Lieutenant-Colonel Walton and dedicated by the Reverend C. J. Eastwood).
Inscription A: IN MEMORY OF THE MEN OF NORTH/ LOPHAM WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES/ FOR THEIR COUNTRY/ IN THE GREAT WAR/ 1914 – 1919/ (15 NAMES)/ "THERE'S SOME CORNER OF A FOREIGN FIELD/ THAT IS FOR EVER ENGLAND"
Inscription B: IN MEMORY OF THE MEN OF NORTH/ LOPHAM WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES/ FOR THEIR COUNTRY/ IN THE WORLD WAR/ 1939 – 1945/ (5 NAMES)/ GREATER LOVE HATH NO MAN THAN THIS.

2002. Addition.
A memorial plaque constructed from polished stone was added at the base of the memorial. It is used to commemorate eighteen Americans, from the United States Air Force, who died in January 1945 due to an air collision. There is an inscription in incised lettering [details unverified].
