Map

November 2011-January 2012. Watching Brief.
Monitoring of groundworks associated with installation of new water main.
The stripping of this section of the pipeline easement exposed two pits with charcoal-rich fills, one of which produced two sherds of possible Saxon pottery, two prehistoric worked flints and a number of burnt flints. Samples from the fills of these features contained abundant charcoal fragments but little else in the way of charred plant macrofossils.
An east-to-west aligned ditch at the western edge of the site was not excavated as it was reportedly associated with a field boundary that had been extant until the 20th century. A number of post-medieval to modern objects were collected from the surface of this feature.
There was no evidence for surviving sub-surface remains associated with a north-east to south-west aligned linear cropmark recorded at TM 3362 9403 (NHER 44827).
Unstratified finds included:
1 Mesolithic/Early Neolithic flint denticulate and 1 serrated blade.
1 Early Neolithic flint side scraper.
2 Late Neolithic/Early Bronze Age flint end scrapers and 1 horseshoe scraper.
18 Neolithic/Bronze Age flint flakes.
1 medieval pottery sherd.
3 post-medieval coins, 1 mount/boss probably from furniture and a crotal bell.
1 undatable iron horseshoe fragment, 1 iron stud, 1 iron riveted strip and 2 iron horse harness fragments.
See report (S1) for further details.
The archive associated with this work has been deposited with Norwich Castle Museum (NWHCM : 2011.718).
