Summary

A watching brief maintained during the installation of a new water main in 2011/2012 recorded a layer of redeposited sandy gravel beneath the tarmac surface of Hollow Hill Road. This may have been associated with the Stone Street Roman road (NHER 10636) but could just as likely have been deposited during the construction of the modern road.

The excavation of the pipe trench through this road junction was monitored due to the potential for remains associated with the Stone Street Roman road (NHER 10636).
No remains of obvious archaeological significance were exposed.
It was however noted that a layer of redeposited sandy gravel lay immediately below the modern tarmac of Hollow Hill Road, resting directly on undisturbed natural gravelly sand. This was may have been associated with the Roman road but could just as likely have been deposited during the construction of the modern road.
