NHER 64875 (Negative evidence record) - Site with no evidence for archaeologically-significant remains

Monitoring of groundworks associated with construction of new dwellings and parking area to rear of The Nunnery (NHER 64882).
This work revealed no archaeologically-significant features or deposits.
Ground reduction for the new parking area immediate behind The Nunnery revealed a probable cellar entrance that is thought to have been associated with an extension shown on early 20th-century Ordnance Survey maps. The associated cellar is presumed to have been infilled when the extension was demolished.
Trenches excavated to the east demonstrated that there has once been a much steeper natural slope between the area of the street frontage and The Mere, which had been reduced and obscured by the recent terracing of the site and the depth of overburden present. Within the area of the new dwellings the subsoil layer present increased in depth from c.0.35m to over 2m at the eastern end of the plot.
Late post-medieval brick and tile fragments were the only finds observed and there was no evidence for waterlogged deposits.
