Summary

This is the site of Rose Cottage, which was a small, single-storey plus attic farm labourer's cottage of probable late 17th- or early 18th-century date. It was timber-framed and had a thatched roof, modern windows and a flat-roofed, single-storey extension to the rear. A basic building survey was undertaken prior of its demolition in 2018.

Site of Rose Cottage.

March 2018. Building Survey.
Photographic survey of Rose Cottage undertaken prior to its demolition.
It was a small, single storey plus attic, three bay, timber-framed farm labourer's cottage with a thatched roof. The timber frame sat on a painted brick plinth and was rendered in harling or pebbledash. The attic would have probably originally been accessed by a ladder, a gable end staircase being a later addition. A front porch and a single-storey rear extension were added in the mid 20th century. Other improvements made to the property around this time included the provision of an internal water supply, along with a lavatory, a bathroom and a modernised kitchen. The north-east gable was also rebuilt using common brick around the same time. All of the windows and external doors were also replaced in the 20th century.
The form of the building and what could be seen of the timber frame suggested a late 17th- or early 18th-century date. This is consistent with the available cartographic evidence as Faden's map of 1797 (S1) shows a building at this location.
See report (S2) for further details (including detailed plans) and digital photographs in file.
The report also contains notes on the ownership history of the cottage and a copy of a structural survey undertaken in 2017 (which concluded that the building was in a considerable state of disrepair and that its renovation probably wasn't economically viable).
