Full Description
March 2018. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of land to be affected by proposed improvements to A11/A47 Thickthorn Junction (Area 2).
The only potentially archaeological-significant responses were three short linear anomalies.
Two, more distinct linear anomalies are likely to represent field drains.
Several discrete patches of magnetic enhancement are likely to represent variations in the natural geology. Areas of magnetic disturbance and scattered discrete dipolar anomalies are also likely to have been caused by ferrous material in the topsoil (most likely modern debris).
See report (S1) for further details.

July-August 2020. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of land to be affected by proposed improvements to A11/A47 Thickthorn Junction (Trenches 6, 8, 10 and 14).
The four trenches excavated at this location revealed remains of only limited archaeological significant.
There was some evidence for prehistoric activity at this location, with a broad shallow hollow at the eastern end of the site producing more than 70 worked flints, including flakes, a blade, a core and various implements. The unmodified blade and a saw made on a blade are potentially Mesolithic/Early Neolithic but the remainder of the assemblage is of probable Late Neolithic/Bronze date.
Another of the trenches was almost entirely occupied by a large feature interpreted as representing post-medieval landscaping. Finds recovered from three exploratory sondages included a post-medieval brick, a post-medieval iron horseshoe, an iron nail a prehistoric retouched flint flake, fragments of animal bone and a number of burnt flints.
What appeared to be an east-to-west aligned linear feature in a trench to the west was interpreted as a natural channel. This produced no finds.
There was no evidence for sub-surface remains associated with the three linear anomalies identified by the preceding geophysical survey.
Unstratified finds were limited to a small number of additional worked and burnt flints.
See report (S2) for further details.
An archive associated with this work has been deposited with Norwich Castle Museum (NWHCM : 2020.109).
