Full Description
March 2018. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of land to be affected by proposed improvements to A11/A47 Thickthorn Junction (Area 3).
This survey identified no responses of potential archaeological significance.
A north-east to south-east aligned linear anomaly in the western half of the site corresponds with a former field boundary of 20th-century date.
Several discrete patches of magnetic enhancement are likely to represent variations in the natural geology. Areas of magnetic disturbance were due to metal fencing surrounding trees and scattered discrete dipolar anomalies were probably caused by ferrous material in the topsoil (most likely modern debris).
See report (S1) for further details.

July-August 2020. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of land to be affected by proposed improvements to A11/A47 Thickthorn Junction (Trenches 7, 9, 11-13 and 15-16).
The seven trenches excavated at this location revealed two linear features and a possible pit, all of which lay at the eastern end of the site.
One of the linear features was a north-to-south aligned ditch. The second was similarly aligned but of a more uncertain nature, being very shallow with an uneven flattish base. No finds were recovered from either feature.
The possible pit was an ovoid shallow feature that also produced no dating evidence. It is suggested that it may well have been of natural origin.
A flint flake of probable Late Neolithic/Bronze Age date was the only unstratified find recovered.
See report (S2) for further details.
