Summary

A geophysical survey of this site in 2018 revealed little of obvious archaeological interest. Although numerous cropmarks likely to represent Roman field boundaries have been mapped at this location (NHER 18236), only one was associated with an evidence for surviving subsurface remains. It should though be noted that subsequent trial trenching of a site to the east demonstrated that the geophysical survey of this land had only identified some of the linear features present (see NHER 65078).

Map

August 2018. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of proposed development site (Area 3 and 4).
The one potentially archaeologically-significant response was a short, north-east to south-west aligned linear anomaly at the eastern edge of the northern area (Area 3). This potentially related to a previously identified cropmark, although there was no sign of any remains associated with the numerous other similarly aligned and perpendicular cropmarks mapped in these fields (part of a group of potentially Roman features recorded as NHER 18236).
Much of the area to the south of the track (Area 4) was covered bv magnetic disturbance likely to have resulted from modern activity on the site. Large amorphous responses in the northern area are likely to represent changes in the underlying natural geology.
Scattered discrete ferrous anomalies are likely to have been caused by modern debris in the topsoil.
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.
