Summary

A kiln is marked at this spot on old maps. There is a circular domed structure with a large opening in the roof and two floor levels. This might be a coke oven used to convert coal to coke.

Norfolk Industrial Archaeology Society party reached island and recorded circular domed structure, 2.7m (9 foot) diameter aperture in roof and two floor level besides door; narrow red bricks lined with soot; coke oven to convert wherry borne coal to coke for maltings?

This site is shown on 6ins O.S. map 1885-6 (S2) as a "kiln". It is possible that it was built in the 1770s with the nearby maltings.
