Summary

Archaeological work at this site between 2021 and 2023 uncovered evidence for limited Roman and post-medieval activity. A geophysical survey undertaken in 2021 identified a small number of scattered linear and discrete anomalies at the western end of the field, most of which were of uncertain origin. The discrete responses did though include two potentially thermoremanent anomalies tentatively interpreted as possible kiln-type features. Linear anomalies in the eastern half of the field were probably associated with former post-medieval field boundaries. Subsequent trial trenching in 2023 identified a number of scattered pit and ditches. Two of the ditches produced Roman pottery but no other features could be associated with this phase of activity. Several parallel ditches and two pits were post-medieval but the remaining features were all undated.

February-March 2021. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of part of large proposed development area (Areas 4 and 5).
This survey identified a number of scattered linear and discrete anomalies at the western end of the field. These are of uncertain origin but potentially represent archaeologically-significant remains.
The discrete responses include two potentially thermoremanent anomalies at the western end of the site that have been tentatively interpreted as possible kiln-type features. It is though also noted that they could have been caused by modern ferrous sources. Similar anomalies were also recorded to the north, on the opposite side of Brickkiln Lane (NHER 65134).
Two adjacent north-to-south aligned linear were also identified in the eastern half of the site. The fact that one continues the line of an extant boundaries to the north and neither continues into the land to the south suggests these were mostly likely associated with a former field boundary of post-medieval date.
See report (S1) for further details.

February-June 2023. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of part of large proposed development area (Trenches 65-92).
The 22 trenches excavated revealed various scattered pits and ditches, a number of which could be identified as being associated with Roman and post-medieval phases of activity.
Although the site produced a small assemblage of Roman pottery this material was almost entirely from two ditches in the western half of the site - one aligned roughly north-to-south and the other west-north-west to east-south-east. The one Roman pottery sherd found elsewhere came from a layer that also produced post-medieval material.
Several north-to-south aligned ditches were of definite or likely post-medieval date. These included one associated with the Newton Flotman/Mulbarton parish boundary and another to the west that corresponds with a former field boundary depicted on the Ordnance Survey First Edition Six-inch map (S2). These produced post-medieval and post-medieval/modern pottery sherds, a post-medieval brick fragment, oyster shell and what were presumably residual fragments of lava quern. Post-medieval pottery and ceramic building material were also recovered from two similarly-aligned ditches and a pair of pits adjacent to one of the known boundary ditches. All of the other pits and ditches recorded were undated.
See report (S3) for further details.
