World War One Memorial with World War Two Additions
Location: Town Green, Junction of Vicar Street and Middleton Street, Wymondham.
Description:
The memorial is constructed from Robin Hood quarry sandstone, in the form of a freestanding obelisk. It is used to commemorate one hundred and forty-three local servicemen who died in World War One, and latterly for forty-three servicemen and three civilians who died from enemy action in World War Two. It is described as “on a tall, elaborate pedestal, with angle-set scrolled acanthus leaf console brackets... The base of the obelisk has a wreath to each face; the front face has a Latin cross carved in relief to the shaft of the obelisk. The whole stands on a square three-stepped base, the corners of which are chamfered” (S1). There is an inscription for the former World War One dedication carved in relief, displayed around the bottom of the pedestal in a clockwise direction (Inscription A; S5). Further inscriptions are in incised lettering, painted black. The one hundred and forty-three names associated with World War One are listed, under segmental arches to each face of the plinth, to “shouldered inscription panels with foliate boarders” (S1). There are also inscriptions to low inscription stones, located on each chamfered corner of the base, for the latter World War Two dates and forty-six associated names (Inscription B; S5).
