Map

August-October 2017. Watching Brief.
Monitoring of groundworks associated with installation of water pipeline between Geldeston and Barsham (Suffolk).
A large tank pit excavated at the western end of the site revealed a deep subsequent of peat deposits, overlain by a humic loam containing modern ceramic building material and hardcore (and therefore likely to represent 20th landscaping).
A sequence of two peat deposits was also recorded beneath the topsoil along most (if not all) of this section of the pipe trench itself. A floor tile of 18th- or 19th-century date and a single animal bone were recovered from the lower peat.
The only other find was a post-medieval pantile fragment found in the topsoil.
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.
The archive associated with this work has been deposited with Norwich Castle Museum (NWHCM : 2019.222).
