Full Description
April-May 2018. Watching Brief.
Monitoring of groundworks associated with broadband installation.
A narrow, relatively shallow trench excavated at this location encountered hard natural chalk at a depth of between 0.3m and 0.4m. Cut into this was a substantial feature interpreted as a west-south-west to east-north-east aligned ditch. This was c.4m wide and therefore probably associated with the medieval defences. The fills of this ditch were overlain by series of hard, metalled road surfaces. These were probably post-medieval, a single pottery sherd of 17th- to 19th-century date being recovered from a trample layer directly above the earliest surface. Fragments of late brick were present within the upper surfaces, one of which was also associated with a clay marble of probable 19th- to early 20th-century date.
The only other feature recorded was an undated post-hole on the north side of the ditch.
No unstratified finds were recovered.
See report (S1) for further details.
