Summary

A geophysical survey of this site in 2019/2020 recorded no potentially archaeologically-significant anomalies. Subsequent trial trenching in 2020 revealed only a small number of ditches and several fairly unremarkable discrete features. The only datable feature was a ditch that corresponded with a former field boundary depicted on a 19th-century map. Finds were limited to a small assemblage of prehistoric worked flints.

Map

November 2019-February 2020. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of land on route of proposed North Tuddenham to Easton A47 Improvement Works (Area F5).
This survey identified no potentially archaeologically-significant anomalies.
Linear trends running parallel to the boundaries of the field were of likely agricultural origin.
Areas of magnetic disturbance around the margins of the site and scattered discrete dipolar anomalies were probably caused by ferrous material in the topsoil (most likely modern debris).
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.

July-October 2020. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of land on route of proposed North Tuddenham to Easton A47 Improvement Works (Area 6; Trenches 25-40).
The 16 trenches revealed a small number of mostly undated linear and discrete features, the majority of which lay in the western half of the site.
The ditches recorded included a north-north-west to south-south-east aligned feature that corresponds with a former field boundary depicted on the Hockering tithe map of 1838 (S1). The other, undated ditches displayed a variety of alignments and were therefore potentially associated with multiple phases of past activity.
The discrete features included two possible pits and a post-hole. A large feature recorded in the centre of the site was interpreted as an infilled pond.
Finds were limited to a small assemblage of prehistoric worked flints, which comprises two blades of Mesolithic/Neolithic date and several flakes of probable Neolithic or later date.
See report (S2) for further details.
An archive associated with this work has been deposited with Norwich Castle Museum (NWHCM : 2020.131).
