Summary

Archaeological work at this site between 2019 and 2020 revealed little in the way of significant remains. An initial geophysical survey recorded only a single linear anomaly, which clearly coincides with a former field boundary depicted on a 19th century tithe map. Subsequent trial trenching did though identify four additional ditches, the alignments of which indicate they were probably associated with one or more earlier phase of activity. This suggestion is supported by the limited dating evidence recovered, which consisted of a small number of prehistoric and Roman pottery sherds.

Map

November 2019-February 2020. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of land on route of proposed North Tuddenham to Easton A47 Improvement Works (Area F27).
This survey identified no anomalies of obvious archaeological significance.
The only response of note was a north-to-south aligned linear anomaly that corresponds with a former field boundary depicted on the Honingham tithe map of 1839 (S1).
Linear trends close to the margins of the field were probably the result of agricultural activity.
Areas of magnetic disturbance around the margins of the site and scattered discrete dipolar anomalies were probably caused by ferrous material in the topsoil (most likely modern debris).
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.

July-October 2020. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of land on route of proposed North Tuddenham to Easton A47 Improvement Works (Areas 33 and 34; Trenches 363-367, 369-371, 373-384 and 387-391).
The 25 trenches excavated at this location revealed limited evidence for past activity, with only four ditches recorded. These features were though potentially of some antiquity, their alignments being distinct from those of the boundaries associated with the field system present by the late post-medieval period. This suggestion is supported by the limited dating evidence recovered, with one feature producing a single sherd of Late Bronze Age/Early Iron Age pottery and four sherds of early Roman pottery found in another. The dating of these features was though hampered by the fact that only two of the four were excavated. A large feature in the south-west corner of the field interpreted as a possible pond was also left unexcavated.
See report (S2) for further details.
An archive associated with this work has been deposited with Norwich Castle Museum (NWHCM : 2020.131).
