Summary

A geophysical survey of this site in 2019/2020 identified a number of linear and discrete anomalies that potentially represented archaeologically-significant remains. The positions and orientations of these anomalies suggested that they were possibly related to a nearby group of earthworks thought to represent platforms and ditched enclosures of medieval date (NHER 28552). However, subsequent trial trenching had largely negative results, with none of the geophysical anomalies found to have associated sub-surface remains. The only feature of note was a depression that coincided with one of the previously recorded earthwork ditches. No datable finds were recovered.

Map

November 2019-February 2020. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of land on route of proposed North Tuddenham to Easton A47 Improvement Works (Area F35).
This survey identified an intermittent north-north-west to south-south-east aligned linear anomaly, the line of which was continued by another linear anomaly recorded in the field to the south (Area F36; NHER 62511). This and two perpendicular anomalies to the west (one in each field) potentially represent infilled ditches. The positions and orientations of these anomalies suggest they potentially relate to a series of nearby earthwork platforms and ditched enclosures that are thought to be the remains of medieval tofts (NHER 28552). A series of discrete anomalies recorded at this location may also represent archaeologically-significant remains. Similar possible pit-type features were also recorded by the survey of the field to the south, all of which lay to the west of the main linear anomaly.
Areas of magnetic disturbance around the margins of the site and scattered discrete dipolar anomalies were probably caused by ferrous material in the topsoil (most likely modern debris).
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.

July-October 2020. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of land on route of proposed North Tuddenham to Easton A47 Improvement Works (Area 39; Trenches 538-540).
The three trenches excavated at this location revealed only one feature of note. Recorded as a pond this coincided with a previously recorded negative earthwork at the edge of a possible medieval house platform (part of an extensive group of remains recorded as NHER 28552). Unfortunately finds were limited to two fragments of ceramic building material of unspecified type and date. A sample taken from the fill of this feature contained moderate amount of highly fragmented charcoal but little else in the way of charred plant macrofossils.
There was no evidence for sub-surface remains associated with the various linear and discrete anomalies recorded by the preceding geophysical survey.
See report (S1) for further details.
An archive associated with this work has been deposited with Norwich Castle Museum (NWHCM : 2020.131).
