Full Description
November 2019-February 2020. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of land on route of proposed North Tuddenham to Easton A47 Improvement Works (Area F36).
This survey identified a north-north-west to south-south-east aligned linear anomaly at the western end of the field, the line of which appeared to be continued by an intermittent linear anomaly recorded in the field to the north (Area F35; NHER 62510). Two perpendicular linear responses to the west (one in each field) also potentially represent infilled ditches. The positions and orientations of these anomalies suggest they may relate to a series of earthwork platforms and ditched enclosures recorded immediately to the north, which are thought to be the remains of medieval tofts (NHER 28552). A series of discrete anomalies recorded to the west of the main linear anomaly potentially represent infilled pit-type features.
Although a cluster of discrete anomalies to the east (at TG 1202 1113) were also regarded at potentially archaeologically significant, they appear to coincide with a former quarry pit shown on the Ordnance Survey First Edition Six Inch map (S1).
Scattered discrete dipolar anomalies were probably caused by ferrous material in the topsoil (most likely modern debris).
Information from draft report. Final version awaited.

July-October 2020. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of land on route of proposed North Tuddenham to Easton A47 Improvement Works (Area 40; Trenches 541 and 543-550).
The nine trenches excavated at this location revealed several undated ditches and a large probable quarry pit.
Three north-east to south-west and east-north-east to west-south-west aligned ditches were exposed at the western end of the site, one of which was potentially associated with a linear anomaly recorded by the preceding geophysical survey. The more extensive north-north-west to south-south-east aligned linear anomaly was not investigated at this site.
Two north-to-south aligned ditch were recorded in the main part of the field, one of which produced a single sherd of medieval pottery.
The large pit lay immediately to the north of the former quarry shown on (S1) and was almost certainly part of this feature. A single sherd of residual prehistoric pottery of possible Late Bronze Age/Early Iron Age date was recovered from its fills.
See report (S2) for further details.
An archive associated with this work has been deposited with Norwich Castle Museum (NWHCM : 2020.131).
