Summary

World War One memorial with World War Two additions, constructed from stone, in the form of a freestanding hollow wheel-head cross bottonée. This memorial was erected around 1920 to commemorate eighteen local servicemen who died in World War One, and two local servicemen who died in World War Two. It was restored in 2014, with a name added to commemorate one man who also died in World War One. The memorial was Listed Grade II in May 2018.

Location: Church Road, junction of Manor Road, Garboldisham.
Description:
The memorial is constructed from stone, in the form of a freestanding hollow wheel-head cross bottonée. It is used to commemorate eighteen local servicemen who died in World War One, and two local servicemen who died in World War Two. The cross is described “pierced with a carving of St George and the Dragon on a tapering octagonal shaft terminating in a moulded foot with shields carved on its four faces. Beneath is a plinth with four projecting faces bearing applied inscription tablets with apexes. The whole stands on a two-stepped square base” (S1). Enclosed by brick and flint wall, and metal railings with a gate. There are inscriptions to the tablets in incised, painted lettering. The former World War One dedication starts to the front face of the plinth below the shield (Inscription A; S4), and continues to the tablet (Inscription B), with eighteen associated names listed across the tablets on the remaining three faces. The latter World War Two dates are to the tablet on the rear face of the plinth, along with two associated names listed (Inscription C).

Inscription B: PRAISE GOD/ FOR THESE MEN OF/ GALBOLDISHAM/ FOR THEY/ LOVED LIBERTY/ MORE THAN LIFE/ & WERE FAITHFUL/ UNTO DEATH.
Inscription C: 1939 – 1945/ (NAMES).

2014. Restoration with Addition.
The memorial was refurbished by the local community, headed by the Parish Council. A name was added to the tablet on the left face of the plinth, in incised lettering, to commemorate A.C. Atkins who died in World War One, Battle of Jutland (S4). There is an inscription to a tablet on the enclosure wall in incised lettering.
Inscription: “Renovated in 2014/ by the/ community of Garboldisham/ to commemorate/ the great war 1914 – 1918.”
