Summary

A watching brief maintained during groundworks at this location between 2010 and 2011 recorded an undated flint and mortar wall and a modern rubbish pit. These both lay at the southern end of the site and were potentially associated with the nearby 19th-century houses on Castle Street.

Location

Civil Parish THETFORD, BRECKLAND, NORFOLK

Map

November 2010-June 2011. Watching Brief.
Monitoring of groundworks associated with construction of eight new residential dwellings.
The site appeared to be relatively undisturbed with the various foundation trenches exposing a deep subsoil layer beneath the surviving topsoil. However, the only feature of note recorded was a north-west to south-east aligned flint and mortar wall, which was partially exposed in a service trench towards the southern end of site (at TL 8733 8305). This was possibly a post-medieval boundary wall associated with the mid-19th-century houses on Castle Street, immediately to the south. A small nearby rubbish pit containing various modern objects (not retained) was also potentially associated with these properties.
No unstratified finds were recovered.
See report (S1) for further details.
