Full Description
June 2015. Watching Brief.
Monitoring of groundworks associated with construction of detached garage at eastern end of plot to rear of 24 Kenwood Road.
The foundation trenches excavated revealed two adjacent north-to-south aligned ditches. One of these features was found to contain a variety of mid-20th-century household waste including paint tins, glass bottles and broken crockery. The second ditch produced no finds.
The presence of these ditches is unsurprising as the eastern boundary of these gardens fossilises the line of a former boundary depicted on the Heacham tithe map of 1839 (S1).
The topsoil and subsoil deposits contained brick fragments and modern metal finds, suggesting they may have been disturbed during the construction of the surrounding residential dwellings between the 1950s and 1970s.
See report (S2) for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 9 January 2022.
