Summary

A geophysical survey of this site undertaken in 2010 identified a number of linear anomalies, the majority of which correspond with features depicted on 19th-century maps. A large area of magnetic disturbance at the southern end of the site probably represents an infilled pond or quarry pit. The subsequent excavation of a small number of trial trenches revealed only a single ditch, which also clearly corresponds with a post-medieval field boundary.

Map

AMarch 2010. Geophysical survey.
Magnetometer survey of part of large proposed development area (Field 13)
This survey identified a number of linear anomalies, three of which correspond with two former field boundaries and a track depicted on the Attleborough tithe map of 1838 (S1). Another was probable a former field boundary of more recent date.
A large area of magnetic disturbance at the southern end of the site probably represents an infilled pond or quarry pit.
Numerous anomalies of probable geological origin were recorded in the northernmost part of half of the site, potentially obscuring any archaeological remains present. Some of these anomalies are clearly glacial, but others may represent a former stream course that pre-dated the modern drainage cut.
See report (S2) for further details. The results of this survey are also noted in (S3).

The pipeline noted above is visible as a cropmark on aerial photographs (S4). It has not been mapped.

August-September 2015. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of part of large proposed development area.
A total of eight trenches were excavated at this location, in two groups of four (Trenches 5-12).
The first group was placed within the area examined by the geophysical survey, although it appears that none of the trenches actually coincided with any of the recorded anomalies. Only a single feature was exposed – a north-to-south aligned ditch that corresponds with a boundary depicted on the Attleborough tithe map (S1). This produced a single prehistoric worked flint and two small scraps of ceramic building material.
The four trenches excavated to the east revealed no archaeologically significant features or deposits.
No unstratified finds were recovered.
Information from report uploaded to OASIS. HER copy awaited.
