Full Description
April 2016. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of proposed development site.
The five trenches excavated revealed a number of linear and discrete features, although these were all probably of limited archaeological significance.
A north-east to south-west aligned ditch seen in two of the trenches corresponds with a former field boundary depicted on 19th-centutry maps. Other remains of probable recent date included a feature interpreted as a north-to-south aligned ditch (which produced a small assemblage of late post-medieval/modern pottery) and at least one pit. The other discrete features exposed were all fairly unremarkable, with at least two thought to be natural in origin.
A sample take from one of the undated linear features was found to contain a single carbonised chickweed seed and common fragments of oak charcoal.
The datable unstratified finds were all also of late post-medieval or modern date. These included a fragment of clay tobacco pipe stem and pieces of ceramic building material recovered from a humic ('peaty') subsoil at the northern end of the site.
See report (S1) for further details.
