Full Description
St John the Baptist's Church. Previously recorded under NHER 1887 (which now just relates to the churchyard of St John the Baptist's Church and the site of St Mary's Church)
March 1959. Listed, Grade I.
Listing Description excerpt:
"Parish church. Largely perpendicular fabric but tower and charnel earlier. West tower, north porch, nave and chancel. Perpendicular nave, four bays, with flushwork parapet, embracing earlier W tower. Early 15th-century porch with armourial shields in octofoils, brick and flint cheque work in gable, springing of groins inside. Chancel: late 13th or early 14th century. Rood stairs on south of nave. Arched braced nave roof, chancel roof and east window tracery 1848. 13th-century piscina. 19th-century benches, c.1920 stalls, Holy Table and reredos. Two medieval stalls with misericords. Wall monument: Nathaniel Bacon: before 1615, Perhaps by Maximilian Colt."

St Mary's Church, demolished, mound only remains (see NHER 1887).

Bradfer-Lawrence in (S3) says that the shields on the north porch formerly bore the arms of Irmingland and Daubeny, showing this is indeed St John's as they were the patrons of that church.
