May-June 2016. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of proposed development site.
The majority of the features exposed were likely to represent natural channels and drainage features crossing this area of low-lying, waterlogged ground.
At the eastern edge of the site a sequence of silty deposits separated by a layer of peat potentially represented some form of infilled watercourse. These deposits were cut by two north-north-west to south-south-east aligned ditches with peaty lower fills running parallel to the extant drain to the east. A large peat-filled hollow or channel was also recorded at the western end of this trench, although this couldn’t be excavated due to the high water table. Further west, another peat-filled channel was exposed that potentially corresponded with a linear cropmark (NHER 26884). The straight, regular nature of the cropmark suggests that it is potentially associated with a feature of relatively recent, post-medieval date.
No finds were recovered.
See report (S2) for further details.
The archive associated with this work has been deposited with the Norwich Castle Museum (NWHCM : 2017.345).
