Summary

Trial trenching at this location in 2020 recorded two large undated probable chalk extraction pits. There was evidence that the site had seen significant truncation, most likely during the demolition of the late 19th-century hospital building that had previously occupied the site.

Map

July 2020. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of proposed development site.
The two trenches excavated revealed evidence for considerable truncation, much of which had probably occurred during the preceding demolition of the hospital building that had previously occupied the site. The only surviving remains of any archaeological interest were two large undated pits that had probably been associated with chalk extraction. Wall foundations observed were the remains of the hospital, which had been built in 1898.
No finds were recovered.
See report (S1) for further details.
