Summary

Trial trenching at this located in 2019 revealed two possible post-holes and a wall foundation, all of which were of probable post-medieval date. There was evidence for significant recent truncation across much of the site, which may well have removed archaeological deposits that were once present.

Map

November 2019. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of proposed development site.
The five trenches excavated revealed only two possible post-holes and a single linear feature. The possible post-holes were relatively shallow features and both contained fragments of post-medieval ceramic building material. The linear feature was aligned east-north-east to west-south-west and appeared to be a wall foundation, its fill consisting of mortar, silt and large flint cobbles covered in cement bonding. It is likely that this was associated with a similarly-aligned freestanding boundary wall that can be seen at this location on the Ordnance Survey First Edition Six Inch map (S1).
The was clear evidence for significant recent truncation across much of the site, with modern levelling deposits lying directly above natural geological deposits in the central and southernmost trenches. The lower portion of a subsoil layer was however found to survive in the trenches excavated at the western and northern margins of the site.
No unstratified finds were recovered.
See report (S2) for further details.
