Summary

A geophysical survey of this site in 2015 identified no anomalies of definite archaeological significance. The only response of note was a discrete anomaly that potentially represented an infilled pit-type feature. Subsequent trial trenching in 2023 revealed little in the way of significant remains, with only two ditches and two pits recorded – all of which were undated. The larger of the two pits coincided with the discrete anomaly identified by the geophysical survey and potentially represented an infilled quarry.

Map

October 2015. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of proposed development area.
The only potentially archaeologically-significant anomaly was a discrete patch of magnetic variation that potentially represents an infilled pit-type feature.
An intermittent north-north-east to south-south-west aligned linear anomaly is thought to have been caused by a modern footpath. A perpendicular bipolar linear anomaly at the southern end of the site is probably related to an underground service.
A number of discrete magnetic ‘spikes’ were probably caused by ferrous objects in the soil, most likely modern debris.
See report (S1) for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 22 May 2022.

March-April 2023. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of proposed development site (Trenches 42-57).
The 16 trenches excavated at this location revealed little in the way of significant remains, with only two ditches and two pits recorded – all of which were undated.
The two ditches both lay at the northern end of the site. One was aligned north-to-south and the other east-to-west. A small pit was noted in this part of the site but not excavated. A much larger pit identified in the central part of the site coincided with the discrete anomaly identified by the 2015 geophysical survey. This was potentially an infilled quarry pit.
Unstratified finds were limited to two late post-medieval/modern drain fragments.
See report (S2) for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 30 October 2023. Amended 14 March 2024.
