Summary

Gardening works have revealed spreads of worked flint throughout this area. A large quantity of small pieces of burnt flint has been observed on several occasions, appearing in areas of bare soil and on at least one occasion within a 10cm deep layer of soil. This may represent prehistoric settlement in this area. It has been suggested that the wet nature of Top Common to the north and the adjacent road name "The Springles" could indicate the presence of a former spring, attracting settlement.

Map

2016. Casual Observation.
A spread of burnt flint has been observed throughout the garden. The flint occurs is a scatter of small areas of bare soil. The pieces are small, rarely more than 2cm. It is possible that these find scatters represent prehistoric settlement in the area. The nearby Top Common is a very wet area, and the adjacent road name "The Springles" when combined with this may indicate the presence of a former spring. However, no springs have been noted on historic maps examined.

April 2016. Casual Observation.
Additional burnt flint was observed during further work in the rear garden. A 2m by 1m area was exposed. The burnt flint was located in a layer of soil beginning approximately 10cm below the turf and extending for a depth of approximately 10cm. The extent of the layer continued beyond the area of gardening work.
