Full Description
September 2018. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of proposed development site.
The three trenches excavated revealed three ditches and two discrete features of probable natural origin. The ditches lay in the eastern half of the site and were all aligned north-north-west to south-south-east (and therefore roughly perpendicular to the adjacent Kenninghall Road). They produced a range of medieval to post-medieval finds including a possible medieval brick fragment, a late medieval or transitional (LMT) pottery sherd and ceramic building material of probable post-medieval date. These were therefore probably associated with plot or property boundaries of relatively recent date, although no corresponding features as shown on the available 19th-century maps. Samples taken from the fills of these ditches were found to contain charcoal and relatively low densities of cereal grains – all likely to represent debris from domestic activity.
The two sub-circular discrete features were both undated but potentially related to an orchard shown at this location of the Ordnance Survey First Edition Six Inch map (S1).
See report (S2) for further details.
